a watery-melon patch

So a few months ago we did something odd and bought a few little watermelon plants. All for the great expense of $3.00... we weren't really expecting much to come of them, they looked half dead, and growing watermelons is not exactly something we are experts at. But we forgot that this is Australia, and all you have to do is give a plant a little water, and it'll take over your life. So three months later, our three tiny little plants have done that. Taken over our yard. And still there were no watermelons to show for it. Until we did a little searching yesterday... and found this...

Ahhh... what a nice surprise. It was hiding under masses of leaves. Tricky little thing. Or big thing, I should say. So then we dug around to see if we could find any more. And of course we did. Just one more. But we were pretty happy about it...

There they were just hanging out together, hoping we would never find them... although those were the only two big ones, we did find a few little ones just starting to grow. So I guess we'll be having watermelon for dessert all winter long. Mmmmm... what a nice place Australia is.

And by the way, if you don't get my watery-melon patch heading there, it just means you haven't watched enough of Maggie and the Ferocious Beast. Nothing to be ashamed of... but you might want to get on top of that. You don't want to go your whole life missing out on a show like that.
